Which statuses exist to run a business in Belgium?
| Status | Who is it for? | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| Side-activity self-employed | Employees who keep their job | Zero contributions in 2026 under €1,922.16 of reference income |
| Main-activity self-employed (natural person) | Simple start, moderate profit | 2026 minimum contribution: €890.42 per quarter, €459.82 for a primostarter |
| SRL (BV) | High profit, risk, partners | No minimum capital, but a financial plan and sufficient equity |
| Student self-employed | Students enrolled in higher education | In 2026, no contribution under €8,687.04 of income; 20.50% on the portion between €8,687.04 and €17,374.08; above that, main-activity regime. Conditions: in principle 18 to 25 years old and enrolment in at least 27 credits or 17 hours of classes per week |
Contribution figures are those published by the FPS Social Security for 2026, excluding the social insurance fund's management fees. Other company forms exist (SA, SC, limited partnership). They suit more specific situations.
Can I change status later?
Yes. Many self-employed people start as natural persons, then move to an SRL when their profit grows. The switch has a cost: it is best to plan for it.
Can I be a side-activity self-employed person if I am a job seeker?
Special rules apply depending on your benefits payment body. Ask them before you start, and talk to your accountant.
Is an SRL mandatory if I go into business with partners?
No, but it is often the most suitable form: it sets out each partner's shares and limits liability. A single shareholder is also enough to set up an SRL.
What contributions does a side-activity self-employed person pay?
In 2026, no contribution is due if reference income does not exceed €1,922.16. Above that, the minimum contribution is €98.51 per quarter.
