How does personal income tax work in Belgium?
IPP is a progressive tax: your taxable income is split into brackets taxed at 25%, 40%, 45% and 50%. For 2026 income (assessment year 2027), the thresholds are €16,720, €29,510 and €51,070. For 2025 income, they were €16,320, €28,800 and €49,840. A first part of income, the tax-free allowance (quotité exemptée d'impôt), is not taxed: €11,550 for 2026 income, against €10,910 for 2025 income. It is increased for dependent children.
The calculated tax is topped up by the additional municipal tax, a percentage of the tax that depends on your municipality of residence.
For self-employed people and company directors, no withholding tax is deducted at source on profit. You therefore need to plan ahead. From 2026 income (assessment year 2027), the IPP reform abolishes the surcharge for insufficient advance payments on self-employed profits. It still applies to company directors' pay. Advance payments remain useful: they earn a bonus and avoid a large balance to pay.
For an official calculation, FPS Finance provides the Tax-Calc tool.
Does this simulator replace Tax-Calc?
No. Tax-Calc is the official FPS Finance tool. Our simulator gives a quick estimate and helps you plan ahead, notably your advance payments.
What is an advance payment?
It is a voluntary payment of tax during the year. For a company director, it avoids a surcharge. For a self-employed person, the surcharge is abolished from 2026 income, but the payment earns a bonus. It is spread over the year according to a calendar set each year.
Why does my municipality change my tax?
Each municipality sets the rate of its additional tax on IPP. It applies to the calculated tax, based on your home address on 1 January of the assessment year.
Are my social contributions deductible?
Yes, self-employed social contributions are deductible business expenses. Enter your profit after contributions in the simulator.
Are my entries saved?
No, the calculation runs in your browser. Your entries are sent only if you submit the form.
