What makes an accountant's price vary?

Accountants' fees are free in Belgium. Each firm sets its own prices. They almost always rest on the same factors.

1. Your legal form. A self-employed individual can, depending on the case, keep simplified bookkeeping and declares income under personal income tax (IPP/PB). An SRL (BV) keeps double-entry books, prepares annual accounts, files them with the National Bank and submits a corporate income tax return. The workload is clearly greater.

2. The volume of documents. Every purchase invoice, sales invoice and bank movement must be recorded and checked. 20 documents a month and 200 documents a month do not take the same time.

3. Your VAT regime. A VAT-exempt business (annual turnover up to €25,000) files no periodic VAT (TVA/btw) returns. A monthly filer submits twelve a year. Some sectors have specific rules: reverse charge in construction, multiple rates in hospitality, distance sales in e-commerce.

4. Staff. From the first employee, payroll, NSSO (ONSS/RSZ) returns and social follow-up are added, often with a social secretariat.

5. The level of advice. Simple bookkeeping or real support: optimising your remuneration, preparing advance tax payments, dashboards. Advice has value, and therefore a cost.

6. Your organisation. Documents sent every month through an online tool cost less to process than a shoebox handed over once a year.

What price ranges are seen on the market?

We only publish a market range if it comes from a verifiable, dated source [A_VERIFIER: find a recent study or public source on accountants' fees in Belgium, otherwise hide this block]. Otherwise, compare detailed quotes drawn up on the same criteria.

Our own prices are public, excl. VAT and dated. You can find them on our Fees page, and the estimator below gives you a personalised range.

How do you compare two accountant quotes?

A low price can hide extras. Before comparing, check these points in each proposal:

  • Are VAT returns and the customer listing included?
  • Is the personal or corporate income tax return included, or charged separately?
  • Are the annual accounts and their filing with the NBB included for an SRL?
  • The number of documents covered by the flat fee, and the price beyond it.
  • Meetings: how many per year, and at what price beyond that?
  • Exceptional operations: incorporation, amendment of the articles of association, liquidation.
  • The professional's title: the titles of accountant and chartered accountant are protected and awarded by the ITAA (Institute for Tax Advisors and Accountants). Check the registration in its public register.

A clear engagement letter answers all these questions before signing.

Is an accountant mandatory for a self-employed person?

No, no law requires you to use an accountant. But VAT, tax and social obligations are numerous. Most self-employed people delegate to avoid mistakes and save time.

Why does an SRL cost more than a self-employed individual?

The SRL keeps double-entry books, prepares annual accounts, files them with the National Bank and submits a corporate tax return. The director also has their own personal income tax return.

Are accountant's fees tax-deductible?

Fees linked to your professional activity are in principle deductible business expenses. VAT on these fees is recoverable if you are VAT-registered with a right to deduct.

Is an online accountant cheaper?

Often for simple files, because processing is automated. Check, however, the level of advice included and whether you can speak to an identified professional.

Pay by the hour or by flat fee?

A monthly flat fee gives visibility and spreads the cost over the year. Hourly billing suits one-off assignments. Our plans are monthly flat fees.

What is the difference between an accountant and a chartered accountant?

Since 30 September 2020, the ITAA awards, among others, the titles of chartered accountant (expert-comptable, formerly certified accountant) and certified chartered accountant. Both can keep your books, prepare your annual accounts, advise you on tax and represent you before the tax authorities. Some statutory assignments, such as certificates for third parties, are reserved for the certified chartered accountant and the statutory auditor.

Does e-invoicing change the price?

It can lower it over time. Since 1 January 2026, invoices between Belgian VAT-registered businesses are electronic and structured, which makes automatic processing easier.
